Two years after Volkswagen discontinued the manual transmission GTI and Golf R, the six-speed Jetta GLI may soon suffer the same fate.

TFLCar reports heading into the 2027 model year, Volkswagen will only offer its sporty Jetta GLI with its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The option — or lack thereof — first appeared in a U.S.-market order guide, and was soon confirmed by VW's U.S. division despite their best intentions.

"Our region worked very hard to keep them around ... even so, global demand continued to narrow to a point where the market can no longer sustain it," the company wrote. "As much as it hurts, that reality meant making some tough choices."

Tough, yes, but not entirely surprising. Volkswagen took the six-speed manual GTI and Golf R out to the back of the shed following its refresh in 2025, with the three-pedal Jetta GLI sticking around as a consolation prize after a refresh of its own that same model year.

Volkswagen's Canadian division confirms the stickshift option will be discontinued for the Canadian market as well. Pour one out.
