This just in: Jaguar will call the production version of the Type 00 concept the ... Type 01.

Jaguar made much noise about its next chapter only to be met with equally loud criticism in short order, but the marque is holding steady with its plans to build an all-electric gran tourer.

It was previewed by the Type 00 concept, a low-slung, slab-sided EV coupe set to be revealed in its production-ready, sedan form later this year. Jaguar referred to it as the "4-door GT" until now, but when it hits production, it will officially be called ... the Type 01.

Here's what the name means: the 'Type' moniker has been part of Jaguar's nomenclature strategy for decades, so naturally, it carries forward here. The numbers denote a few things; the official party line is that the zero denotes zero emissions, and the one represents the first model in this new range. Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover has his own interpretation.

"We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance," he said. "The Type 01 name is part of that story. For me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the one, our first car for a new chapter, a 'one of a kind!'"

When the Type 01 debuts later this fall, Jaguar hints at a tri-motor EV powertrain generating a combined 986 hp and 959 lb-ft of torque underneath. In the meantime, official teaser images straight from Jaguar give a glimpse of what we could expect.
