It wasn’t that long ago that the Toyota Corolla and the colour beige were synonymous with each other. The jokes were endless, and sadly, some of the stereotypes rang true. However, a revitalized Toyota organization stated several years ago that they will no longer build boring cars.

While this is still up for debate, Toyota has built some of their best sports cars over the last decade, and what they have lined up in the future - like the GR GT - further solidifies their quest to build exciting vehicles. For consumers on a slightly tighter budget than a dedicated sports car calls for, they can have a vehicle like the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition.

The Toyota Corolla Sedan is still as boring as ever. However, it does so in a reliable, efficient and economical manner. Well maintained, these will run until the end of the universe with ease. No muss, no fuss. To add some spice to the mix, the Corolla Hatchback was offered. It offered all the positives of the sedan with added cargo space and a sportier look that make it one of the more attractive hatchbacks on the market.

What's the FX Edition about?

This year, Toyota has decided to offer a special version of the Corolla Hatchback that is offered in limited numbers both in the United States and Canada. 1600 units are offered south of the border and Canadians get 150 cars. It's meant to be a nod to the 1987 Corolla FX16.  Those of us old enough to remember this lil' pocket rocket will reminisce how simple cars used to be. Think of lightweight, a 7,500rpm redline, and a slick 5-speed manual transmission.

Sadly, the 2026 Toyota Corolla hatchback FX Edition is all looks. Don’t look for any additional power, suspension upgrades, or a sporty exhaust note. Buyers can expect special 18-inch satin white wheels, a black spoiler, and orange interior highlights. Canada only gets one color option, white. The wheels look sporty enough but the stuck-on spoiler looks a bit much, since it's larger than what is found on the more powerful GR Corolla

Driving impressions & Powertrain

This is no GR Corolla Lite, and if you go in expecting as much, you will be disappointed. Power comes from a 2.0-Litre 4-cylinder engine that produces 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Power goes through the front wheels only, via a continuously variable automatic. Power is adequate, sadly the CVT does tend to make the engine sound unhappy when pushed.

No manual transmission is offered, which would have changed up the fun quotient of this considerably. The CVT auto isn't bad, when set to sport mode and dictated via the shift paddles on the back of the steering wheel, it is capable of being playful, but not so much when left to its own devices.

The ride is smooth even on rough roads, which is impressive given the big wheels working against it, just don’t go thinking you can keep up with sportier cars on twisty roads. Any added sense of sharpness in this FX edition's chassis comes strictly from smaller tire sidewalls.

Interior accomodation

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition is typical Toyota; it's ergonomic and straightforward, with good fit and finish, but it's competitors all feel fancier in their execution. The highlight of the cabin are the seats, which are not exactly the same, but very similar to the excellent sport seats in the GR Corolla.

They are a mix of leather(ette), perforated suede(like material), and orange highlights for a little extra visual flair. The driver's seat is 8-way powered, and they are some of the best chairs Toyota makes. Their snappy orange highlights continues in the form of orange stitching throughout the cabin to make it feel a little more special, even if it's just for appearance's sake.

Efficiency

Fuel efficiency for the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition is slightly down from the sedan version. Fuel economy numbers from Toyota are 7.5 L/100km in the City; 5.9 L/100km on the highway for a combined 6.8 L/100km. During our test week, I achieved a respectable 7.2 L/100km. Regular gas is recommended.

Money

With an MSRP of $31,069, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition falls in the upper-middle of Corolla grade walk, with a moderate feature list like a JBL sound system, heated seats, and a wireless charger, with the highlights being the aforementioned wheels and seats - both of which are great, but maybe not enough to set it apart.

If you specifically want a hatchback, there are compelling options to fit your budget. If a sporty demeanour is what you are looking for, Hyundai offers the Elantra N-Line for about $1,000 more and offers more power, a snappy DCT, and sportier handling.

Wrap it up

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Hatchback FX Edition is a bit of a hard sell but thankfully, it's still very affordable, and it's safe to assume it'll be more or less trouble free for many, many years, so it's not too hard of a sell.

The Toyota faithful will be more than happy with their purchase, but I would have, in an ideal world, liked to have seen something with around 225 horsepower, improved suspension, and a manual transmission, and maybe a $35-40k sticker. This would open up the market to those who can’t afford a full-blown GR Corolla, but want something that falls in line with what the FX16 was, and more importantly, with what it's competitors are offering.
