Subaru has built their whole identity around their symmetrical all-wheel-drive, a true full-time all-wheel-drive system that’s pretty much unique to Subaru; everyone else tends to favour an on-demand style of system that’s disengaged until wheel slip is detected. The reason for this is because there is a real energy cost that comes with driving all the wheels all the time, and it hinders fuel economy. Most fuel saving measures and hybrid powertrain layouts tend to run directly counter to Subaru’s signature system, forcing you to choose between one or the other - that is until the e-Boxer came along, like in this 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.

What is Subaru e-Boxer
This isn’t the first time Subaru has tried launching a hybrid powertrain, but does feel like the first time where it’s poised to perform and sell well. Like Mazda’s new hybrid, the e-Boxer borrows a lot of this very clever hybrid technology from the benevolent corporate giant that is Toyota. Unlike Mazda, Subaru spent a lot of time and energy incorporating Toyota’s tech trickery into their mechanically unique heart, creating a final product that’s a best of both worlds; it still drives and feels like a Subaru, just better.
It still uses a flat, four-cylinder boxer engine, displacing 2.5 Litres. Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) is replaced with an eCVT, which sounds like it’s the same as a typical CVT, but they couldn’t be any more different inside. Inside this gearbox are two motors, one attached to the back of the engine on the input side, and one mechanically linked the wheels on the output side, with a simple planetary gearset in between them.


There’s a lot to it, but in essence, by varying the power and/or resistance being applied to these two electric motors, the engine can be started, stopped, directly driven, freewheeled, revved up or down, and anything in between, all completely independent of the other motor, which can apply power to accelerate, or harvest energy to decelerate/brake. A powertrain control unit manages the whole balancing act, and makes it all work together completely imperceptibly.
Lastly, on the other side of this eCVT is a centre differential that meters power to all four wheels, all the time. This mechanical tie that binds all the wheels together is literally (not just a slogan) what makes a Subaru a Subaru, and contributes to their unmatched sense of stability and traction. Other car makers, like Toyota themselves, have to manage different power levels, and different levels of regenerative braking coming in unevenly from all four corners of the corner of the car and make it feel harmonious. On a Subaru, it is harmonious on its own.


Fuel efficiency
As I alluded to before, it’s not all sunshine and roses; nothing is perfect. Driving all four wheels all of the time requires more energy than driving two, and as such, more fuel is needed - Subarus have kind of always been notorious for being thirstier than their mainstream competitors, and that does remain true here, albeit to a much lesser extent.
In a week of normal driving in mixed conditions, I averaged 6.7L/100km. This puts it roughly in-line with other sub-compact crossover vehicles; behind Toyota’s Corolla Cross Hybrid (5.4L/100km), in front of Honda’s HR-V (non-hybrid, 8.3L/100km), and well clear of the last Crosstrek I drove (non-hybrid, 9.8L/100km). It represents a more than 30% reduction in fuel use in broadly similar circumstances.
So while it is still not the most frugal, it is quite thrifty, and significantly more thrifty than without the hybrid system, all without having to give up its traction advantage, either.


Performance
The combined peak output of the naturally aspirated 2.5L four-cylinder boxer engine and the electric motors is 194 horsepower, and 199 foot-pounds of torque. The electric system essentially stands in for the engine at idle and low speeds, and it accelerates smoothly and silently, just like an EV, until the gas engine is very stealthily started once underway.
It does a very nice job filling in the lack of low-end torque typical with boxer engines, and it can drive solely on electric power at up to 80km/h under the right conditions. If you’re in a hurry, it can leap ahead confidently and merge/pass fairly easily, but it’s still a far cry from being exciting. Subaru has other vehicles to fill that niche.


Comfort and refinement
Subaru has spent a lot of energy over the years trying to iron out the gruff demeanour inherent to boxer engines, and the addition of this hybrid drive has made for the most refined boxer I’ve ever driven. If you’re coming from another Subaru, you will be impressed at how smooth and quiet the engine is (when it’s running), and if you’re coming from another car, you probably won’t really notice; which I’d say is a mission accomplished.
Otherwise the Crosstrek hybrid drives like a Subaru. It’s softly sprung, compliant, comfortable, and predictable. The controls have just enough weight and connection to the rest of the car to keep you feeling confidently apprised of what’s happening on the ground. Body control and stability are a noticeable step up from larger Subarus, but I’m not sure I’d call it fun-to-drive. It’s inoffensive without being too bland, and finds a way to be satisfying anyway.


Interior accommodation and cargo
Our loaded Limited trim tester has just about every nicety Subaru has to offer, including a power moonroof, two-tone leatherette seats, carbon-ish trim, an 11.6-inch center screen, digital gauge cluster, heads-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 10-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, among others. It’s a nice place to sit with comfortable chairs, good head and leg room in the rear, and good visibility.
Subaru’s Starlink infotainment is a little slow at times and looks a little dated, but it’s easy to live with and works well. Subaru’s active driving assists behave naturally and will happily sit in traffic for you, and their driver attention monitoring feels a lot less overbearing than it has before - although this may be placebo.


The only slight downside is that the battery pack for the hybrid system lives in the rear floor, so it impedes cargo space very slightly, sacrificing 47 litres over the standard models (down to 527 L behind the seats), and you also have to give up having a spare tire, too.
Having said that, I didn’t notice it had shrunk until I looked up a spec sheet, there’s still plenty of room for whatever you need. If you need more space but still want the e-Boxer’s benefits, I’ll direct you to the Forester Hybrid.


Value
At least for the time being, this e-Boxer powertrain remains locked behind the top-shelf Limited trim, adding a $2,500 surcharge on top of that, bringing the price of this loaded tester to $40,595. Assuming you drive the national average of 15,200 kilometers per year, you’ll save just under 500 L of fuel a year, so it’ll pay for itself in about four years, and you’ll have a nicer car for it.
For reference, a loaded Honda HR-V is $38,700, without an optional hybrid and much pokier performance, and a loaded Corolla Cross $38,985, and doesn’t have this Crosstrek’s level of refinement, and neither have its unique all wheel drive advantage.


Wrap it up
If it sounds like I like this car, it’s probably because I do. This car was scheduled to be retired after my week with it, and I was asked to bring it back with no fuel left for shipping. Given how efficient it is, that meant I had to drive it a lot, and with everything else I had to drive that week, that meant I had to make time to go out of my way to drive it a lot.
In most other vehicles, especially most other compact commuter crossover vehicles, that would have been a chore. In the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, I was surprised and delighted to find that it wasn’t. This little thing is brilliant.
