Often times, when I review a car, I would start by checking out its direct competition. Doing so gives me a sense of what my subject matter is trying to achieve in the marketplace, and the functions and features that will resonate with its target audiences. So, when it came time for me to pick up this 2026 Mini JCW Convertible, I quickly tried to look across the market for a comparable, and realized it is actually a rather tall task – more on that later.

under the hood

At the heart of this range-topping Mini John Cooper Works Convertible is a two-litre twin-turbocharged engine that produces 231 horsepower and a 6.4-second zero to 100 km/h sprint time. At first glance, these numbers may not look impressive, but the strong power delivery in the early rev range makes the Mini JCW feel much livelier than those numbers convey, and there is always a sense of silly fun lighting up the front tires at every opportunity.

The Mini’s exhaust also manages to make a satisfying growl when you put it into its dedicated Go-Kart mode, though it is worth noting that it is no longer the fiery crackle that we have come to love in previous generation Mini JCWs, but rather a deeper and more grown-up note.

Driving impressions

I had the opportunity to spend some extended seat time with the Mini JCW Convertible over a series of winding back roads and noticed there is plenty of zip to this little roadster – its steering response is fast, there is a good amount of feedback felt through the thick steering wheel, and the specially tuned sports suspension is well calibrated to keep the Mini tidy in the corners.

My only regret is the choice of wrapping the 17-inch wheels with Maxxis Premitra HP6 tires, as they were not simply not a good match for the Mini JCW performance capability. I was constantly running into the limits in the corners, and I could definitely feel that a proper set of sticky tires will really do this corner carver justice.

Fuel use

According to Natural Resources Canada’s fuel consumption guide, the 2026 Mini JCW Convertible is rated to consume 9 L/100km in the city and 6.6 L/100km on the highway for a combined average of 7.9 L/100km. My observed figure came in at 8.6 L/100km for the week, which is not bad considering that maximizing fuel efficiency was absolutely not my priority. Premium fuel is required for the Mini JCW.

open top joy

The Mini JCW Convertible’s soft top can be operated at speeds up to 30 km/h, which makes it convenient for when the unpredictable weather hits or when you want to have it closed as you're rolling up to your destination.

Moreover, the top can be opened like a sunroof at any speed, and the opening is quite wide to bring in a good amount fresh air and sunshine into the cabin. A fun feature on the Mini JCW is the Always Open Timer that tracks just how many hours you have spent driving with the top down.

interior accommodation

I have always liked the Mini for its emphasis on delivering fun above all else, and of course this latest generation is loaded with gadgets and software to do just that. From the moment you step inside where you notice the sporty red and black interior, to when you are snuggled up in the supportive JCW sports seats, to the familiar feeling of having to twist the start/stop switch like a key to hear the growl of the engine getting fired up - it's all set up to bring a smile to your face from the get-go.

While I don’t love that the only way you can see your speed is through the oversized roundel infotainment screen in the middle, or through the small head-up display, I do like that there are lots of playful graphics and features baked into the software. It features eight experience modes for the vibe you are feeling, even though I only understood the go-kart mode, and there are various lively animations when you toggle between menus to keep you from ever feeling bored. You can even customize the headlight and taillight greeting and goodbye patterns, too.

The Harman Kardon Surround audio system is not the best quality in its price range, but it does a good enough job piping out the tunes, and the infotainment supports wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity, which is always a bonus. There is a wireless charger on board that sits vertically with a clip holding the phone in place - a design that I found cumbersome to use, especially on the go.

value & Competition

Base price of the 2026 Mini JCW Convertible is set at $59,990 – a $16,000 premium over the base Mini Cooper Convertible. Sprinkle in several additional features such as the Ice Sunshine Blue Metallic paint, Union Jack pattern on the soft-top, and Driving Assistant Plus drivers assistance features, along with the aforementioned powertrain and chassis enhancements, and we arrived at an as-tested sticker of $62,190.

Remember when I said it was a tall task to find a competition? Well, after realizing I am not going to find another hot hatchback that can drop its top, I started looking around for another convertible whose biggest superpower is to bring joy. I found two: a Ford Mustang GT Convertible that sends close to 500 horsepower to its rear wheels through a five-litre V8, and a little sports car that is known unofficially as the answer.

wrap it up

Even though all of these cars could not be more different, the common underlier is that they are focused on bringing genuine joy to people who enjoy open-air driving. I suppose those who are looking at any one of these convertibles already have their preference and are not looking at objective factors, and those who pick the 2026 Mini JCW Convertible will certainly find themselves basking in the sunshine with the biggest grin all summer.
