Volvo has pulled the silky, presumably Ikea-sourced sheet off the 2028 XC40, revealing the crossover's second refresh since its 2018 debut.

The 2028 XC40 starts with a nip and tuck up front. The new fascia wears a slimmer grille, stretched-out and flanked by a pair of reshaped, matrix LED headlights with a new interpretation of Volvo's "Thor's hammer" light signature. Around the back, the 2028 XC40 wears a resculpted bumper and tailgate, complemented by slimmer tail lights with more angular light accents. New wheel designs across the lineup tie it all together.

Inside, the updates to the XC90 and XC60 trickle down to the 2028 XC40. Poking somewhat crudely out of the dash is a larger 11.2-inch, portrait-oriented touchscreen running Volvo's latest Google-based software. Other upgrades include Google's Gemini AI assistant now handling voice commands, an updated wireless charger design now props up your phone, a new ambient lighting design, and a new interior colour option called Arianne Cardamom.

Elsewhere, Volvo updated the 2028 XC40's active safety and driver assist suite. It sees updated radars, sensors, and cameras for an expanded set of talents. Door Opening Alert lets you know if something or someone is quickly approaching just as you open the door, Pilot Assist can now automatically change lanes and is supposedly smoother all around, and the optional 360-degree camera now has a 3D view setting.
Under the hood, Volvo's 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine remains, though the all-electric EX40 has seemingly been axed on account of the upcoming EX50. Production begins this fall in Belgium; expect the first 2028 XC40s in dealers early next year.
