It's been a hot minute since Mitsubishi last sold an EV in North America, but that's about to change with the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback.

The Eclipse Sportback is the first fully electric Mitsubishi for the North American market since the i-MiEV bowed out more than a decade ago. It follows a similar idea to the Nissan Rogue PHEV, but draws an Uno reverse card — this time around, being a near-twin to the Nissan Leaf, it's Mitsubishi copying Nissan's homework.

The similarities are hard to miss. The Eclipse Sportback and Leaf are identically sized, share a platform and powertrain, and are even built alongside one another on the same production line. It also uses the same dual-charger setup — a traditional J1772 charger on the driver's side front fender, and a NACS port for fast-charging at Tesla Superchargers.

Key differences between the two are the front and rear fascias, lighting, wheels, and obviously the Mitsubishi badges. Mitsubishi hasn't given us a glimpse at the interior, either, but we can't imagine it will stray too far from the Leaf.

Mitsubishi says we can expect the first few copies of the 2027 Eclipse Sportback to pop up by early fall. Pricing is still under wraps, but we don't imagine it will stray far from the Leaf's $45,000 kick-off point.
